Stop, Swap and Roll with a Giveaway!

Happy Saturday!  Today I'm joining many bloggers over at Jungle Learners for a fun product swap!

For the product swap, I was paired up with the very talented teacher/blogger Kimberly from Live, Laugh, I Love Kindergarten!

Just like everyone else participating in this product swap, I got to choose one product of my choice from Kimberly's store to test out in my classroom.  It was very hard to choose just one, because she has got some great resources!  Be sure to check out her TpT store!

I decided on her product, Reading Comprehension Passages: Animals!

Kimberly's resource is filled with 12 different animal passages.  Each passage is on one page and includes comprehension questions!  One thing I really liked and appreciated is the fact that these passages are a mix of fiction and non-fiction!  Below is a list of the animals included in this set of passages.

My students loved the passages (my group this year seems to love everything animals) and were proud when they found out that they could read these independently!  We worked with a 2 of the passages this past week.

The first passage was all about alligators!  After our first reading, we discussed the story then went through and identified all of the nouns and verbs - our grammar focus this week.  We highlighted nouns yellow and verbs green.  I love having students highlight with different colors.  I find it helps them to really see the difference between the words.  After the third reading, students completed the comprehension questions independently.

       

The second passage was a fiction passage about a fish.  For this passage, I did some differentiating as far as the skill that students needed to practice.  The little guy below had to find all words that had the letter f and highlight the letter.  After a few readings, students answered the comprehension questions independently.

• mix of fiction and non-fiction
• great mixture of animals
• reading level worked great for my students
• simple, no-prep, yet very engaging

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hello Friends!  How do you teach your younger students about Martin Luther King Jr?  I've always found that younger students have a hard time understanding the impact that MLK had on our lives.  Through the years I have come across many great books and activities to help make this concept more meaningful.  Here are a few things we did this week....

First, we read a few books about Martin Luther King Jr.

Then we created these fold and learn posters from Lita Lita.
